I am a geospatial scientist interested in examining human-environment interaction with specific focus on the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems. My academic training is in environmental remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). I have a broad research interest in climate change impacts and adaptation. My research projects in Asia, Africa, and the USA focus on agricultural sensitivity to climate variability, adaptation strategies in smallholder farmer communities, and effects of national-level policies on forestry and conservation.
Themes
Land-atmosphere processes, Land change trade-offs for ecosystem services and biodiversity , Land management systems
The authors used high-resolution satellite and census data from India, the world’s largest consumer of groundwater, to quantify the impacts of groundwater depletion on cropping intensity, a crucial driver of agricultural production. The results suggest that, given current depletion trends, cropping intensity in India may decrease by 20% nationwide and by 68% in groundwater-depleted regions.
