Working at the nexus of land and water systems, my primary research is the modelling and valuation of ecosystem services, the integrated modelling and assessment of socio-ecological systems, and the impact of land use and climate change on natural capital. Through the application of these research areas and the leadership of others I also carry out large multi-disciplinary research projects on the socio-ecological-economic impacts of land and water management decisions. I have recently led a number of projects that estimate the economic and biophysical impacts of policy investments in water and land management, including projects investigating: i) the benefits of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in south east Australia; ii) the socio-economic impacts of irrigation development in northern Queensland, Australia; iii) the value of ecosystem services in eastern Africa, and; iv) the social-economic impacts of drought in Australia. I have published 60 papers in high-impact international refereed journals and given over 40 papers at international conferences. I am Associate Editor for the International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystem Services and Management, and on the Editorial Board of Environments and Subject Editor for OneEcosystem. I am Treasurer of the Ecosystem Services Partnership and co-lead the Mapping Ecosystem Services Working Group. I am a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Future Earth Global Land Project, and have a number of other high level international roles (IPBES, UNCCD, European Union) where I contribute expertise on modelling and valuing ecological-economic systems.
