Inadequate recognition and tracking of existing area-based conservation pose challenges to global commitments of conserving 30% of the Earth by 2030. The authors of a new perspective in One Earth propose and test an inclusive, empirically grounded approach of documenting area-based conservation governance systems. Their inventory reveals greater coverage and diversity of conservation governance systems than previously recorded, in the Amazonian countries and globally. They provide guidelines for researchers, governments, non-state actors, and donors to adopt such inventories as a fundamental step towards fulfilling biodiversity commitments.
