Christine Ornetsmüller is currently completing her PhD in Land System Science at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In her dissertation she works on ways to improve the representation of human aspects and decision making in land use analysis and modelling. Christine uses GIS, the land system model CLUmondo and participatory approaches including board games to better represent and understand land use changes such as crop booms, that are induced by globally and regionally highly demanded commodities (maize, oil palm, rubber, coffee). Her most recent projects are 'Smallholder's decision making in the maize boom of northern Laos' and 'Causal explanations underlying locations and spatial patterns of smallholder crop booms'.
