Maria Garcia-Martin works since March 2018 at the Chair of Social-Ecological Interactions in Agricultural System at the Universities of Göttingen and Kassel. She also collaborates with the Chair of Societal Transition and Agriculture at the University of Hohenheim. She is interested in the broad field of human-landscapes interactions with a focus on societal transitions towards landscape sustainability. She pays particular attention to integrated landscape management approaches and to the study of the personal interaction with places for cultivating landscape stewardship. She conducts transdisciplinary, participatory place-based research mainly in European rural and peri-urban landscapes. From 2014 to 2016 she was part of the European research project HERCULES (Sustainable futures for Europe´s HERitage in CULtural landscapES: Tools for understanding, managing, and protecting landscape functions and values; within the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Program). Currently she is involved in the DAAD funded cooperation project GAtES (German-Armenian Network on the Advancement of Public Participation GIS for Ecosystem Services as a Means for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development) and the DFG funded project LANDSCAPE CHAINS (Linking places and processes for sustainability: Social-ecological dynamics and value chains of Mediterranean landscape products).
