The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is the intergovernmental body which assesses the state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society, in response to requests from decision makers.
For sustainable development to succeed, we must move away from piecemeal decision-making about biodiversity and the benefits of nature to people. A goal of the IPBES is therefore, to deliver policy support tools and methodologies for scenario analysis and modelling of biodiversity and ecosystem services based on a fast track assessment and a guide.
The now available assessment presents a best-practice ‘toolkit’ of the approaches that can be used to decide on policies and actions by Governments, the private sector and civil society. Different valuation methodologies are evaluated according to different visions, approaches and knowledge systems, as well as their policy-relevance, based on the diverse conceptualization of values of biodiversity and nature’s benefits to people, including provisioning, regulating and cultural services.
