The postdoctoral fellows will contribute to the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project FORESTDIET led by Laura Vang Rasmussen. They will be expected to co-develop research that examines how forest loss and forest fragmentation influence dietary quality. The candidates are expected to leverage existing datasets on food consumption, agricultural production, land cover change, including agricultural expansion and contraction, and deforestation and reforestation. The candidates are also expected to compile additional data on socio-economic characteristics and biophysical conditions in the regions of interest. Moreover, the postdoctoral fellows will assist in the development of stakeholder tools to further strengthen their skills in effective communication of research results.
Candidates should hold a PhD in environmental sciences, geography, agricultural economics, land change science, nutrition or a related field. Geo-spatial and statistical expertise, strong programming abilities (R), experience doing independent research, and excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills are required. Applicants must have a clear track record of successful completion of independent work, with at least one accepted first author publication at the time of application.
Specific profile required of Postdoc 1: A researcher with solid remote sensing and image processing skills. Experience with land cover mapping in tropical countries and handling of large-scale datasets will be necessary.
Specific profile required of Postdoc 2: A researcher experienced in environmental, agricultural or resource economics with a strong background in causal impact analyses and global datasets, ideally LSMS or/and DHS. Preferably, Postdoc 2 will also have experience in assessing food security.
The selected candidates will be based within the Section for Geography at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN), University of Copenhagen, Denmark and be part of Rasmussen’s ERC project group as well as the research group ’Environment and Society in Developing Countries’. They are expected to travel to University of British Columbia at least once a year to meet with collaborators and to engage in frequent team meetings with the project mentors. The candidates will present research findings at regional and international scientific meetings. The successful candidates will lead data analysis and writing on selected research papers, and will have the opportunity to help supervise MSc and PhD students working on the project.
IGN conducts research and education on the past, present and future physical, chemical and biological environments of the Earth and their interactions with societal and human systems to provide graduates and research in support of sustainable future solutions for society.
