Deadline

Start Date

The VU Environmental Geography Groups offers a postdoc position for someone holding a PhD degree in the field of agricultural sciences, spatial ecology, geography, or environmental sciences. The postdoc is appointed within the FACCE-JPI (NWO) funded project VITAL (www.vital.environmentalgeography.nl). VITAL explores how land use and agricultural systems can become more sustainable while allowing high production, i.e. sustainable intensification. The objective is to identify how differences in agricultural systems, their geographic location and the role of actors, lead to, or inhibit, transition processes of sustainable intensification. This is done at farm, landscape and regional scale, but also upscaling to the level of the European Union is part of the research. Methods include a combination of field survey and spatial modelling techniques using geographic information. The postdoc both cooperates in project tasks lead by other project partners, and performs independent research.  Knowledge of land use systems and experience with spatial data analysis is essential. Research experience in the field of environmental or socio-ecological systems and experience with survey work and stakeholder interaction are an advantage. The successful candidate has affinity and experience with an international and interdisciplinary working environment, and will have a strong publication track record and a good ability of writing and communication in English. Command of Dutch is an advantage. The successful candidate will preferably be able to start the position at May 1st 2017 or soon after.
