As part of a new project on sustainable charcoal (see here) Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) are advertising a 16-month post doctoral research position, based in Maputo.

The post holder will work with communities in southern Mozambique to understand how they can make the most out of the opportunities offered by engagement with the charcoal industry (the 4th largest in Mozambique) and how to mitigate the impacts of the current boom and bust mode of exploration.

The post holder will lead on the qualitative social science aspects of the project, including facilitating “horizontal learning” between communities that have already experienced the charcoal boom, and others which are about to do so. They will be part of a team including researchers working on remote sensing, quantitative social science, and forest ecology. The project is a joint enterprise between UEM and the University of Edinburgh, with strong links to Mozambican government agencies who manage the charcoal industry, at national to district level.

Deadline for applications is 15 March.
