The research group on Land Use Change & Climate at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology’s Campus Alpin (IMK-IFU) located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (http://www.imk-ifu.kit.edu/institute.php), in collaboration with the Laboratory for Geoinformation Science and Remote Sensing at Wageningen University, is currently looking for a PhD candidate in historic land cover/use change and aboveground biomass modelling. The research group aims to advance knowledge of the causes and consequences of change in socio-ecological systems from local to global scales (see: www.imk-ifu.kit.edu/land_use_change.php).
The PhD candidate will work on improved maps of European land cover/use and its changes for the last century and build upon previous work using the Historic Land Dynamics Assessment (HILDA) model (www.wur.eu/hilda). The aim of the research is to provide innovative high-resolution land cover/use change maps for the last century with a new level of detail (thematically, spatially and temporally) that can be linked with various land management and aboveground biomass activities to assess recent trends in the management of the land surface as part of the Earth system.
