Funded MSc or MA: Smallholder Livelihood Resilience in Commodity Frontiers of the Paraguayan Chaco

Professor Yann le Polain de Waroux is looking for a motivated individual to join the Land, Environment and Development lab (www.LENDEV.weebly.com) at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) for a two-year MSc or MA in Geography, starting in September 2023. The successful applicant will examine how expanding agricultural commodity frontiers influence the ability of smallholders to cope with climatic and hydrological stress in the Paraguayan Chaco, with a focus on the Pilcomayo River basin.

Requirements:

  • Experience with qualitative methods, quantitative methods, and/or GIS
  • GPA > 3.5 or notable relevant work experience
  • Demonstrable travel and/or fieldwork experience in countries of the Global South,
  • preferably in Latin America
  • Willingness to conduct extended fieldwork (3-4 months) in remote areas
  • Upper-intermediate level (B2) in Spanish (following the CEFR framework)

The lab will provide a stipend to cover living expenses in Montreal, and the student will be expected to apply for additional funding.
