Agricultural land abandonment is becoming increasingly a global phenomenon. Agricultural land abandonment has different definitions, trajectories of land-use change, ranging drivers and various implications to the environment, livelihoods. Depending on the perception, environmental and institutional setting, agricultural land abandonment can be subject to the different land-use policies and often carry different connotations, compared to often negatively perceived deforestation processes. Overall, all these complexities require a better understanding of agricultural land abandonment as a process. The first in the upcoming series of “Land abandonment” webinars will introduce the topic, state of the art research and existing research gaps. An introduction of “land abandonment” will run for approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by a discussion.
