Remittance Dynamics and Land Change

Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of this Working Group is to gather together a critical mass of interested land system scientists to examine the multiple facets of remittance dynamics and change in land systems throughout the world. There is a knowledge gap that needs to be addressed and the time is now ripe to attempt a synthesis. A key output of this goal is the production of a high-profile journal article describing a theoretical framework for the study of remittances in land systems, illustrating processes and patterns from case studies across the world, and articulating remaining challenges and ways forward. This output will serve as the catalyst for outreach and engagement with the broader policy community engaged in questions of both land and migration.

The organizers and several participants of a recent Working Group Meet & Greet put together this blog post summarizing the discussions held during the event. Although it will take time to make sense of the myriad changes the COVID-19 pandemic has brought and continues to bring into their lives as scientists, and into the socio-ecological land systems that they study, they identified several likely patterns of long-term change. GLP Event: Land Systems and the Pandemic — Learning from Global Shocks

Three of our GLP Working Groups are planning a joint hands-on event to exchange and synthesize insights and observations deriving from the “COVID-19 global shock”. The event will be a combination of brief talks and focused discussion, including crowdsourced insights from participants via micro-posters.
